I absolutely believe these four travel taboos are around for a really good reason and I also absolutely believe that to really experience a place fully you are going to have to break these rules – or at least bend them. Just use your head and make good choices. Don’t break these rules blindly, but don’t be afraid to compromise on them when the right chance comes around.
1. Eat local food from a local place
Now, I am not saying to be stupid and just go eating off the first street corner cart you can find – but do some research. Maybe ask the people where you are staying where the locals’ favorite spot is. Ask what is the typical dish is, and go explore! Traveling is all about trying new things. You might be surprised…
2. Travel somewhere alone
It is scary the first time you head out on your own. At first it will feel like there is no one there to support you, but soon you will find this opportunity to support yourself is more rewarding than you could have ever imagined. You will be more open to meeting new people and have the flexibility to jump on interesting opportunities you never saw coming. It is invigorating. I recommend that everyone try it at least once.
3. Go on a trip with no plans or itinerary
Step away from that sheet of paper! Try buying a ticket into and out of a place – but make no formal plans. Of course, do some research to make sure you don’t miss some of the incredible sights, but if you schedule every minute, you will be closing yourself off from many unexpected journeys. It’s all about the balance.
4. Travel off the beaten path
Never heard of a place? See it barely mentioned in the guide book? Take a chance and go see for yourself what is there. You never know what you are going to find.
